Foods I Love, but are they Low Carb/Sugar???

So, I’ve been enjoying some really great foods since I started my new so called low carb eating plan. I recently did some research to make sure I am actually staying within my 40 carb/day limit and 15 grams of sugar/day limit. To my surprise I am not. Ha. Here’s what I’ve been eating, pretty much most of the time.

  • Activia Yogurt. I usually have one a day, in the middle of the afternoon. My favorite is cherry, which has 13 carbs and 9 grams of sugar (not too bad and satisfies my sweet tooth).
  • For breakfast I love a bowl of warm, steamy oatmeal, which has 27 grams of carbs and 1 gram of sugar. Not to mention the fiber benefits you get from oatmeal. I sprinkle a teaspoon of brown sugar on it, which is 4 grams of carbs and 4 grams of sugar. Though it’s high in carbs, they are good carbs.
  • I also love to snack on mozzarella cheese sticks which have less than 1 carb and less than one gram of sugar. Perfect for when I just need a little something.
  • Salad of course is a staple and I love to chop up my veggies in bite size pieces so I can scoop it up with my fork. These were the most surprising results I found.  I love cucumbers (almost 2 carbs, less than 1 gm sugar), carrots (1 cup has a whopping 12.3 carbs and 6.1 grams of sugar! gotta watch those crunchy good things!), red onion (another surprise at 14.9 carbs and 6.8 sugars), green leaf lettuce or romaine (less than 1 carb and less than 1 gram sugar), shredded cheese (1.7 carbs and less than 1 gram sugar), and balsamic vinaigrette (3 carbs and 3 sugars). I can stick with lettuce an cucumbers for a salad. I think I’ll try to find a lower carb/sugar dressing though…something less than 3.
  • Eggs scrambled without milk (2 carbs and 1.5 sugars), shredded cheese (1.7 carbs and less than 1 gram sugar), Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy (0 carbs, 0 sugar) and green chilies (6.4 carbs, 0 sugar).
  • Sausage links (less than 1 carb and less than 1 gram sugar)
  • Cantaloupe (14.4 carbs and 13.9 sugars) mixed with vanilla Activia yogurt (13 carbs and 9 sugars)

So, as you can see from my research, I really have to watch the yogurt, certain veggies and fruits. I’m going to start looking up everything I eat, before I eat it so I can really stick to my 40 carbs/15 grams sugar a day.

Tomorrow is my weigh in and even though I didn’t exactly hit my daily limits, I know I ate better than I have been and I can feel my body changing inside and out.

What are some of your favorite low carb/low sugar foods?
