First 5K Race!

Posted on 24. Apr, 2010 by in 5K and other competitions

I did it! I completed my first 5K race ever today. I never, ever in a million years thought I would enter a 5K race, or any race for that matter. I’ve struggled with being overweight and obesity my entire adult life and just never saw myself entering races or anything like that. However, since I began my weight loss journey (this time), my whole mindset about myself is changing as well. I never realized how negative I was about myself until recently and it is my goal to discontinue all those negative thoughts all together! This 5K race is affirmation that I’m stepping out of my insecurities and self consciousness and into being the secure, confident woman God created me to be!

I will tell you, I was so nervous and a little worried. I was nervous about being one of the only “big” girls there and I was worried about what others would think of me. I tell you, I NEVER would have done this race by myself…not for the first time anyway. It was great to have my friend Tishia alongside me today. Especially when we saw the pack move on ahead…way ahead of us…then when we watched the 10K racers all pass us, who started 15 minutes after the 5k-ers.

When we got near the finish line, the onlookers were cheering us on and we ran jogged the rest of the way in. That lifted our spirits and made us feel good for completing it, even though we walked it and came in last. It was a ton of fun, and I am very proud of myself and Tishia for doing it! We are planning on doing another one in July, which has a separate 5K walk and 5K run. Then our goal is to compete in this race again next year as RUNNERS!

Here is a video I made from the pictures we took. I think Tishia has more videos and when she gets them uploaded I will post a link to them too. Enjoy and let me know what you think. Have you ever competed in a 5K? What was it like your first time? Were you nervous or self-conscious?

Mary (and Tishia) … I am soooo proud of you! I’ve always wanted to do a 5k … walk because I don’t think my body could tolerate a run … I am impressed … my eyes watered honestly LOL … I want you to know how you inspire others. *huGs* Suzanne
